When the support of a painting is no longer viable, it may have a new support attached to the original one, which takes on the "tensile stress".

The original support may no longer be valid for many reasons, resulting in its replacement.

There are many ways to line a painting and different materials may be used in the process.

Sometimes paintings only need their edges reinforced which is called Strip Lining.
